The market managed to keep some small gains, closing on a strong note. Techs were a bit weaker. Metals and energy groups showed a lot of strength. XLE (energy) added nearly +2.89%. Financials and techs were weak for the 2nd straight day. On the other hand, commodity-related sectors bounced. Metals and mining groups were strong. Coals showed a lot of strength: MEE +7.58%; CNX +6.53%; BTU +7.64%. Oil services also recorded solid gains: RIG +2.46%; SLB +3.93%; NOV +4.37%. Crude oil closed above $115/barrel. […]
Commodity-related sectors were down big today and kept pressure on the overall market. USO went down 3.48% as the crude traded below $120/barrel intraday. The market gapped up today, but, quickly dove into the red. Bush, in a “symbolic move”, lifted the ban on offshore drilling. This prompted the oil services sector to jump. OIH added +2.28% today, while, among its top holdings, RIG, NOV, and SLB recorded solid gains, +1.75%, +5.38%, and +2.65%, respectively.
