Commodities and related sectors just cannot seem to find a bottom. The market experienced another broad-based selloff! Metals, coals, fertilizers, and energy stocks all recorded huge losses. The market had a “gap-up” open today as oil took a huge dive on the news that damages from Hurricane Gustav seemed to be limited. But, when SPX went above 1300, the market started to turn lower again! This weekend, in my Market Forecast, I said,

Commodities and related sectors continued to bounce higher today. Crude closed above $120/barrel and gold traded nearly $840/ounce! Energy stocks added to their gains: HES +4.89%; CLR +5.4%; HK +5.94%. Gold and silver miners jumped: AEM +6.93%; ABX +6.76%; PAAS +6.26%. Gold (and other precious metals), oil, and natural gas prices spiked up again! Gold is above $970/ounce and crude is above $102/barrel, while the rest of the market staggered. Yesterday, I mentioned that I didn’t like seeing VIX above $22. Sure enough, the broader market faltered today.
