The Fed came to the financial markets’ rescue today. It lowered “discount rate” (the rate at which the Fed loans money to banks) by 0.5% to 5.75%. It left the benchmark federal fund rate alone, for now, at 5.25%; and, signaled its willingness to do more to cushion the economy.
